Andrew Kelly

Born and work in Sydney (Australia)

While I am passionate about composition and technique, nostalgia and childhood memory are strong themes in my work.   My aim in combining these areas of interest is to create (as Jeffrey Smart might say) "beautiful pictures", that connect with the viewer via either subject or mood. In addition to Jeffrey Smart I have long admired and studied the works of Georgio de Chirico, Edward Hopper, and local artists Roland Wakelin, Rick Amor, and Reg Mombassa.  I subscribe to the view that the best landscape painting occurs when one knows the subject well - Australian colour palettes and motifs feature heavily in my work.  Progress means that the role of the urban landscape artist is also that of a documentarian - many of the architectural subjects I have painted have since been demolished or remodelled beyond what my work recognises.
